Our go-to summer ‘dos like balayage and textured waves may look fab on our Instagram feed, flowing in the breeze as we sip cocktails by the pool and bask in the sun. Up close though, the efforts we go to achieve these styles are wreaking havoc on our hair. The temperature may be heating up, but that’s no excuse to let our hair burn. Give your hair a break from the heat, and follow our tips to get lustrous, shiny locks.
Use a deep-conditioning treatment or hair mask
Salt-water might be good for our skin, but our hair says otherwise! All those dips in the ocean are drying it out, leading to lacklustre locks. Put down the sea salt spray if you’re after smooth, shiny hair. To keep your hair looking healthy and repair any damage, try using a deep-conditioning treatment once a week.
If you’re after a DIY approach, have a go at making your own hair mask. Trust us, your locks will thank you for it. Here’s our suggestion: Mix one egg with two tablespoons of olive oil, adding either a whole avocado or a tablespoon of honey. Leave on for 10 minutes then rinse thoroughly.
Rinse hair using cold water
There’s something so relaxing about a hot shower to finish a long day. Washing your hair in warm water opens the hair cuticle, allowing shampoo and conditioner to do their thing. To keep your hair looking extra shiny, it’s actually best to rinse in cold water! By doing this, it seals in the moisture from the conditioner, resulting in smoother hair. Not liking the idea of cold showers? Even just three seconds is enough to do the trick!
They seem to be the holy grail of hairbrushes. It was a staple of 20th century screen sirens to help them create their enviable, wavy hairstyles. Boar-bristle brushes carry oil produced by the scalp to the ends of your hair, adding a lustrous shine in the process. There’s some truth to the ‘brush your hair 100 times a day’ advice after all!
Infuse your hair with natural oils
A cry is heard from those with naturally-oil hair everywhere. As much as we hate an oily scalp, natural oils are needed to keep your hair looking shiny and hydrated. Keep an eye out for products that contain natural oils such as argan, designed to be absorbed by the follicle and nourish the hair. Try to avoid synthetic moisturisers like silicon, as these tend to sit on top of the hair, giving the appearance of it being dirty.
Try a clarifying shampoo
We all know the benefits of exfoliating our skin, but how many of us exfoliate our hair? Clarifying shampoos remove build up from sprays, gels and other products. By cleansing the hair, you can say goodbye to the dull layers and hello to the beautiful shine underneath!
