The mercury’s on the rise, you’ve got mojitos on your mind and there’s a house by the beach with your name on it. But before you put the top down and crank your summer road trip jam, we must address the not-so-fun-part. Packing.
It’s a bit of a drag, we know. That’s why we’ve put together a few of our favourite summer trends that we know will pass the suitcase test! Put these pieces at the top of your packing list and you’re guaranteed to look good, feel great and have a tonne of smokin’ pics to show for it.
Holidays always mean lots of walking, and you will kick yourself if you don’t pack something comfortable for your feet. That doesn’t mean you have to look like a tourist though. White sneakers look polished and effortless. And as for your tourist status – the only thing white sneakers will expose is just how fabulous your tan is. Tip: Wear them on the plane and on any other travel days to keep your feet happy, and to save space in your luggage.
It’s time to shake out your mum’s ’70s peasant tops and give crew necks and plunging Vs the cold shoulder. If you’re not one for hand-me-downs you’re in luck, because these floaty, flirtatious styles are enjoying a massive resurgence this season. The relaxed fit makes it a comfortable, easy-to-wear piece by day, and pairs back perfectly with jeans, shorts or a denim mini and your favourite kicks. By night dress it up with block sandals, chunky earrings and, easily your best accessory, a set of glorious sun-kissed shoulders.
Oh, the wonderful cami. Is it a slip? Is it a singlet? Who cares! Blurring the line between under and outerwear is sexy as heck, and those steamy hot days at your dream destination are the best excuse to give your ladies some breathing room. It’s a super versatile piece for day or night, exudes resort luxe vibes and is screaming to be tossed in your suitcase, in several different colours, naturally.
Denim for Days
If you’re anything like us, then the holiday destination you have chosen will be at least 20 degrees too hot for jeans. So leave ’em at home and put a denim mini on your packing list instead. Apart from being another big hit this summer, this ’90s icon is made for travelling. Denim doesn’t crease, rarely needs washing and goes with everything, from sandals and camis, to sneakers and, another must-pack relic of the ’90s, a logo tee. Keep it current (and classy) with a high or mid-rise waistline.
One & Only
The black one piece has always been chic, but this summer it’s leading the pack. Classic and confident, it flatters any body shape and skin tone, and while it may be practical, it’s far from boring. Achieve easy elegance with cheeky cut outs, mesh panels or a stunning strappy back. Need further convincing? Remember all those times you’ve almost lost your bottoms in the surf? Slippage is a non-issue with the one-piece – thank us later.
Rectangles are so passé. Claim your ‘spot’ in the sand with an enormous round beach towel. Roundies give you way more room to wriggle and roll around, and they’re decidedly more photogenic that rectangles. The only downside is that they don’t ‘Tetris’ quite as well at crowded beaches, but with any luck you’ll have a secret paradise all to yourself anyway. If packing light is your main priority, opt for a Turkish towel. Turkish towels are thin and light yet still highly absorbent, and many of them are offered as roundies, too.
