But before you go overboard on a spending spree, take the discount frenzy as an opportunity to invest in some key, good quality pieces that you actually need.

To help you on your shopping mission, we’ve put together the top 7 items you should be investing in while they’re on special this saving season.

  1. A Warm Coat

Let’s be honest, coats are expensive – a but a good quality coat is one thing seriously worth the extra cash. Not to mention, your backside will be thanking us come that dreaded August cold snap.

  1. A Good Pair of Boots

Are your boots made for walking? If the answer isn’t “Hell yes!” it’s time for an upgrade. Take a look at your current shoe-drobe situation and make a call. If you’re in desperate need of some knee-high’s, now is the time to invest! Otherwise, go for a short, leather ankle boot that will stand the test of time.

  1. A Cashmere Sweater

  1. Bag a Bargain

Don’t forget about your hardware – invest in a classic, medium-sized handbag that will go with just about everything! While it may be tempting to splash out on an ultra-trendy, neon pink printed designer bag that’s about a million per cent off, we advise getting your classics sorted first. A good quality leather bag is something that can last a life time if well cared for.

  1. A Fabulous Bra

Every woman needs a good support system, but we all know a good bra can set you back. Take advantage of all the end of financial year sales, and treat yourself to a set of designer lingerie. Start by knowing your measurements, each brand can run slightly different, then aim for a quality brand in a supportive style.

  1. Some Luxurious Sheets

Sherman explores modern society’s obsession with aspiration, narcissism and the cult of celebrity.

What to Wear: Cindy Sherman is known for playing characters in her photography, so why not opt for something that’s normally out of your comfort zone? If you’re a jeans-and-tee-kinda-girl, rock a frock in a fun print or colour.

To Print or Not to Print

No matter your size, style or taste, there’s a print or pattern to suit you…

Perhaps you’ve shunned prints from your wardrobe in the fear they’ll make you look bigger or too over-the-top? Or maybe you just don’t know how to incorporate them into your everyday look? Whatever the reason, we’ll show you how to embrace them. Because let’s face it, prints aren’t going anywhere!

Use Prints to Flatter Your Curves
Don’t want to enhance your voluptuous booty or draw attention to your hips? Structured pants or a pencil skirt will streamline your bottom half, while your printed top distracts attentions from your problem areas.

Match Colours, Not Prints
More often than not, if the colours work together, so will the prints. A great example is monochrome. Try pairing black and white polka dots with black and white stripes and be amazed at how well they complement each other.

Finish Your Look with Understated Accessories
Keep your extras minimal so they’re not in competition with what you’ve got on! When in doubt, you can rely on a pair of black platform heels and a simple clutch to complete your outfit. Remember, less is more.

Still Scared to Don the Print?
Baby steps will get you there! Try adding a printed handbag, belt or shoes to get you used to the idea. Slowly but surely you will learn love a splash of print in your look, and perhaps even dare to wear this season’s hottest trend.

Use the tips above to get you into print perfection and be surprised at the splash of life it will give to your already fabulous wardrobe!

What to Wear with Flared Jeans

Skinny jeans are out, flared jeans are in. But what do you team them with?

A quick glance at your social media feed has no doubt shown you that flared jeans have well and truly made a comeback.  Now that’s great for the already style-savvy, but if your experience with this particular wardrobe piece consists solely of laughing at photos of your mum in her flower child days, you might want to read this…

Put your best foot forward.
The most important thing to get right when it comes to rocking a pair of 70s-inspired flares is your footwear. And the good news? You can pretty much wear anything with them! We’d suggest opting for a bit of height, though, as it’s key that the wide leg doesn’t touch the ground. To avoid this, reach for shoes with a heel or higher platform. Let’s face it, flares and platform shoes were made for each other!

Keep it neat.
Flared jeans can be incredibly chic, and the best way to show this off is to keep your look modern and simple by not adding too many accessories. Team the jeans with a nice blazer and you’ll be good to go.

Don’t be afraid of prints.
Printed flared jeans can be really fun, but also tricky to pull off. The key is to keep the rest of your outfit simple, leaving emphasis on the pattern. A black or white top will go with pretty much any pair of printed flares you get your hands on.

Team your pants with a wide top.
Go for a slightly shorter top, shirt or sweater than normal to create a beautiful and strong silhouette.

Tuck your shirt into your pants.
Flared jeans can be worn with almost any type of top. Tuck your shirt or blouse completely into the jeans, or go for the more casual look and let the lower part of the top hang out a little.

Go all out in denim!
Banish those images of bad 90s looks gone wrong and don’t be afraid to rock denim on denim. If you’re feeling super daring, pair your flares with a denim shirt or jacket in the same hue. A more conservative approach (which would also be easier to pull off!) is to team your jeans with a lighter or darker colour denim.

The Art of Buying Lingerie

Got it? Flaunt it! We give you the lowdown on choosing the perfect fit…

Iconic French fashion designer, Christian Dior once said: “Without foundation there can be no fashion.” Dior also stated that “Lovely lingerie is the basis of good dressing.” We couldn’t agree more.

It’s time to get your top drawer in top form, get synonymous with the “s word,” and shop comfortably and confidently when buying lingerie. Just as you exercise caution when picking the right style of jeans for your shape, the same is needed for your undergarments. Choosing the right style of lingerie is essential if you want to achieve the perfect fit and uplift, be comfortable – and feel as good as you look!

If You’ve Got It, Flaunt It

No matter your body shape, stray from buying lingerie that’s going to highlight your “problem” areas. Instead, flaunt your assets! If you’re pear shaped and bottom heavy like most women, draw attention to your bust with a lacy underwire bra, and bring sexy back with a full brief to slim those hips and thighs. Not too endowed in the bust department? Opt for some extra oomph with an underwire push-up bra with padded cups.

If you are genetically blessed with that Marilyn Monroe hourglass figure (and with a hint of jealousy, we salute you!), strut your stuff in a smoking two-piece set. Make sure both pieces fit your figure properly, and accentuate your curves in all the right places.

Alas, not everyone is lucky enough to possess an hourglass figure (sigh). Thankfully, if we don’t have it, we can fake it! Got a boyish frame? Add feminine curves to your shape with frilly silhouettes. These girly touches will add volume to a straight figure so that it appears more curvaceous.

Last but not least. Legs for days? Emphasise those sleek stems with a high cut thong – your fashionably-fitted pants will thank you.

Where to Brunch in Sydney (And What to Wear)

Make sure your wardrobe matches your favourite Sunday morning hangout…

Brunch O’clock is serious business to Sydneysiders, which anyone who’s lined up in Surry Hills on a Saturday morning for their caffeine hit will know only too well. Here’s where to get your smashed avo in the iconic city, and more importantly – what you should be wearing to munch it down.

Four Ate Five
Where: 485 Crown St, Surry Hills
What: Perfectly positioned on Sydney’s vibrant Crown St, Four Ate Five dishes up delicious house-made mueslis, brilliant baked eggs, mouth-watering raspberry and coconut loafs and so much more. Wash it all down with a fresh juice, Single Origin Roasters Coffee ‘Killer Bee’ or a World Par-Tea loose-leaf tea.
Wear: A morning in Surry Hills requires a little extra effort, although the suburb’s trendy hipsters make it all look so effortless. Team a vintage-inspired striped tee with high-waisted pair of denim jeans for a dose of quirky-cool fashion. Polish the look off with a pair of chunky frames and lace-up pointy brogues.

Sydney Brunch

Lox Stock & Barrel
Where: 140 Glenayr Ave., Bondi Beach
What: A cosy deli diner that can be found in one of the last remaining old pockets of Bondi Beach. Get there before noon to experience the Lock’n’Load (hash, smoked lox, lime and crème fraiche dill dressing), or for those of you with a sweet tooth – Brioche French Toast with rhubarb, raspberry compote, cinnamon and vanilla ice cream.
Wear: Although a bit further away from Bondi’s actual beach, keep the vibe beachy and casual. A basic tee in a bright hue and denim shorts and thongs is perfect on warmer days, or even your gym gear before you set off for a run along the beach (you won’t be the only one wearing this, trust us!).

3 Williams

Three Williams Café
Where: 613a Elizabeth St, Redfern
What: A semi-industrial space that’s been stripped back to reveal concrete floors, bleached tones and concrete floors. Plus, the food matches up to the café’s interior. From herb-rubbed roast duck with roasted pears and rocket to French toast with caramelised banana and Belgian chocolate, you won’t be left disappointed.
Wear: Make sure to bring a knit or overcoat on colder days, as this brunch spot’s popularity will most probably see you queuing outside for a little while. A contemporary printed dress and block-heeled wedges will make the ideal fashion choices when you finally strut inside and get shown to your table. Bon appetite!

How to Buy Your Girlfriend Jewellery

A simple guide to finding the perfect piece for her…

If you’re looking to impress someone special with a gift of jewellery, a cheap bangle from the mass-produced mess at your local chain store isn’t going to cut it. So here are a few suggestions to steer you in the right direction when it comes to buying the right piece of jewellery.

Look at Her
You’ve no doubt done a good amount of this already, but we’re talking about taking a closer look at the details. How would you describe her style of clothing? Notice how she dresses for different occasions such as work, dinner and parties. Does she have a favourite necklace you could match a pair of earrings with? Does she prefer to wear gold or silver, chunky or delicate pieces, designer works or handmade creations?

Listen to Her
Take a detour on your next shopping trip and wander past some jewellery store windows to see if anything catches her eye. When she drops a hint about a piece she likes or a style she’s loving, file it away for that next special occasion.

Go for Colour
Forget everything you heard about diamonds being a girl’s best friend. There’s an abundance of beautiful-coloured stones out there that cost a lot less and are equally as precious. Make your gift more personal by looking up her birthstone, or take some time to research the meaning behind certain colours and crystals that remind you of her.

Don’t forget watches. They’re a great idea when you want to
give jewellery without “giving jewellery”.

Ask for Advice
If your sleuthing skills aren’t up to scratch, turn to her sister or friends for advice. Be sure to pick someone you know won’t spill your secret, and someone who’s familiar with your girlfriend’s style. Keep in mind it’s your gift to give, so take advice on board, but make sure the final decision is yours.

Steer Clear of Rings
Centuries of symbolism have made this a risky gift to give. Think promise rings, engagement rings and wedding rings that have all resulted in awkward misunderstandings. It’s best to avoid this option for new relationships and those not willing to commit just yet.

Choose Quality Over Quantity
One small, good piece of jewellery will always leave a lasting impression as opposed to a large, cheap piece or flimsy set.

Winter Wardrobe: Jane Birkin

We’ve gathered together some of the icon’s most renowned staples…

It’s a new season, a new slate and an opportune time to update your winter wears. The sultry threads of the 70s dominated the spring/summer runways, and the trend appears to be continuing into the colder months too. Think flares, wide-leg pants, turtlenecks, billowy blouses, and suede. If in doubt, just ask: “What would Jane Birkin wear?”

“Everything I wear doesn’t put me in the league of women. If I were a boy, I could look a lot prettier than a lot of boys I know.” – Jane Birkin

With her androgynous figure, blunt cut fringe, long legs, and atemporal thrown-together style, British-born actress and singer Jane Birkin encapsulated the easy-breezy style of the 70s. While many believe she was mainly known for being legendary lounge-pop louche Serge Gainsbourg’s B-side, it was her effortlessly-cool personal style that made her a cult figure in the fashion industry, and inspired the wardrobes of women all around the world.

Fittingly, we’ve gathered together some of her most iconic staples that are making a huge comeback this winter.

Flared Jeans

Jane loved her jeans, and the key-shape of the season is high-rise, wide-leg flared jeans. Style your pair with tucked in tees, tanks and button-down peasant-like tops.

Casual Knit Mini Dress

Jane loved to show off her long legs, and if you Google old 70s’ sepia-toned photos of the English-Parisian beauty, you’re bound to come across Jane sporting a knitted mini dress styled with a low-slung belt and classic ballet flats.

Skinny Turtleneck

The skinny turtleneck certainly nods to bygone eras, and it’s no secret that Jane was a fan of the high-knit neck. Turn heads by teaming this winter staple with suede or tall boots and a mini skirt that hugs your hips. Opt for a monochrome colour palette for an edgier look.

Wide-Leg Pants

Not that Jane needed any assistance in this department, but wide-leg pants are not only a classic addition, they are designed to skim over curvy hips and lengthen those pins – especially when teamed with a killer pair of heels.
