7 Ways to Step up Your Instagram Game This Year

With a new year comes new moments waiting to be turned into memories. All caught on our smartphones of course, before being posted onto Instagram with our favourite filter and copious amounts of hashtags in the caption.

But if you’re not careful, your Insta pics might start looking dull and repetitive. So here’s our fail-safe guide to stepping up your Instagram game in 2017 and scoring yourself countless double taps.

Keep it simple

Less is often more when it comes to great Instagram pictures. Whether it’s a beautiful sunset or your brand new pair of Chloé heels, keep your image simple and use lots of clean space. Busy images aren’t as visually appealing, meaning your followers will end up simply scrolling past them.

Follow the Rule of Thirds

Speaking of clean space, you should get acquainted with the Rule of Thirds this year to help create far more effective and visually-appealing Instagram shots. The basic principle behind the rule is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. Watch the likes come swarming in.

Don’t overshare

As mentioned, less is more when it comes to Instagram pics. The same can be said for the amount of shots you’re taking. No one likes a spammer in their Insta feed, so be careful not to overshare. An image or two a day is more than enough, perhaps even space your shots out with a day or two in-between. Leave your spamming for Snapchat.

Adjust the photo brightness

To create the best-looking images possible, we’d suggest adjusting the photo brightness before you start playing with filters. This is the easiest way to improve your photo without drastically changing it, but be careful not to edit your photo beyond recognition. We’d also recommend picking a filter and sticking with it to create consistency across your images.

Don’t use the front-facing camera for selfies

Ok, we get that it’s convenient. But the reality is that the front-facing camera on your smartphone creates grainy images. Perfect the art of using the rear-facing camera and your selfies will look crystal clear in no time, giving Kim Kardashian and co a run for their money.

Be unique

Yes, we all love shots of food, sunsets and hotdog legs on the beach. But after a while it can all become a bit samey. What’s the best way of avoiding this? Be unique! Spotted an unusual flower or bird on your walk to the train station? See if you can catch it. Have an interesting hobby you rarely see pop up in your Insta feed? Be the first to snap it!

Be yourself

Which brings us on to our last and most important point. Yes, likes and comments might give us a few seconds of validation. But really, do they even matter in the long run? We are all unique and have something different to share with the world, so make sure you capture this in your Instagram photos. Dare to lose the filter, post a makeup-less selfie or simply post a pic of you and your mates messing around. The feeling it brings is worth more than a thousand Instagram likes.
